Why Do My Breakers Keep Tripping? (And When to Worry)

Overloads, shorts, ground faults and failing breakers — what repeated tripping means and when it becomes a fire risk.

A breaker that trips once did its job. A breaker that trips every week is telling you something — and the answer matters, because the difference between "nuisance" and "fire risk" is invisible from the panel door.

The Four Usual Causes

Overload: Too much on one circuit — the classic space-heater-plus-hair-dryer scenario. The breaker trips hot, after minutes of load. Fix: redistribute devices or add a circuit.

Short circuit: Hot touches neutral or ground — a damaged cord, a failed appliance, a nail through a wire. The breaker trips instantly and may refuse to reset. This one gets an electrician, not another reset.

Ground fault: Current leaking where it shouldn't — moisture in an outdoor box, a failing appliance. GFCI breakers catch this; it's shock protection doing its job, and the cause needs finding.

Failing breaker: Breakers wear out, especially in hot garages and older panels. A breaker that trips under modest load or won't stay reset may simply be done — a cheap fix compared to what it's protecting.

When to Worry

Stop resetting and call an electrician if: the breaker trips instantly on reset, you smell burning or see scorch marks, the panel is warm or buzzing, or the same breaker has tripped three or more times this month. Repeated resetting on a real fault is how small problems become structure fires.

What Diagnosis Looks Like

A licensed electrician isolates the circuit, megger-tests wiring if needed, inspects devices on the run, and tests the breaker itself. Most causes resolve in one visit: a bad receptacle, a moisture-compromised outdoor box, or a $150–$300 breaker swap. In older Casper homes, repeated tripping sometimes surfaces the bigger story — aluminum wiring, knob-and-tube, or a Federal Pacific panel that should have been replaced years ago.

Either way, the answer starts with a diagnostic visit, not a sixth reset. Call (888) 217-7440 and get it looked at this week.
