7 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs an Upgrade

Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel? Warm breakers, rust, flickering lights — how to tell your panel is done, and what replacement costs.

Your electrical panel is easy to ignore — until it isn't. Here are the seven signs Casper electricians look for, roughly in order of "plan for it" to "call this week."

1. It's a Federal Pacific or Zinsco

If your 1960s–80s home has its original panel, check the label. Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) breakers failed to trip in independent testing — the panel keeps feeding a fault it should have killed. Zinsco breakers can fuse to the bus bar. Many insurers now decline or surcharge homes with either. Replacement isn't optional maintenance; it's the fix.

2. Breakers trip under normal use

Dryer plus AC equals darkness? That's a panel at capacity. Modern loads — HVAC, EV chargers, home offices — outgrew 100-amp service decades ago.

3. Warmth, buzzing or smell at the panel

A panel should be silent and room-temperature. Warmth, hum, or a hot-plastic smell means a failing breaker or loose bus connection — an active fire risk. Call now.

4. Rust or corrosion

High-plains temperature swings corrodes panels fast, especially in garages and on exterior walls across the corridor towns. Rust on the bus or breakers compromises the connections that keep you safe.

5. Lights flicker when appliances start

Occasional dimming is normal; consistent flickering points to loose service connections or an overloaded panel.

6. You're adding a big load

EV charger, hot tub, addition, tankless water heater — each can demand 30–60 amps. A load calculation will tell you if the panel can carry it. Often it can't.

7. Your insurer or inspector flagged it

Home inspections in Casper resales flag panels constantly, and insurance renewals increasingly require replacement letters. Getting ahead of it beats a closing-delay scramble.

What Replacement Costs

A 200-amp upgrade typically runs $1,800–$3,500 in the Casper area, completed in a day, permit included. If the meter base or mast needs work — common on older homes — the quote covers it upfront. Call (888) 217-7440 for a free assessment.
